According to the rugby news site scrum.com, Dhani Jones will be on loan to the Blackheath Rugby Club to play in a game against the Cornish All-Blacks. After taking a “crash course” of the sport he’s actually expected to get playing time. Of course, being a linebacker, he may have to work on his ball handling skills.
Blackheath HC Harvey Biljon is excited about his new player:
“Our players thought it would be fantastic to have a full-time athlete from a top American sport testing himself among our amateurs,†Biljon said.
“Because Dhani [pronounced Dee-hah-nee] is a defensive lineman, his catching and passing are the things we need to work on.
“All being well, he will come on the field as a flanker. I don’t think it will make much difference whether it’s blindside or openside.
“We just have to make sure that when he hits someone it is an opponent who has got the ball and that he’s not running an illegal blocking move.â€
I think other pro sports leagues should swap players to promote their games. Not only would I watch this rugby match, I would love to see Steve Nash play soccer, Yao Ming play football, or Tank Johnson swim a 100m butterfly.

Many Cowboys fans were displeased with the timing of Romo’s Mexican vacation just before their playoff game. Despite their 13-3 record, I can’t say I was surprised at the outcome. Not only did they fizzle in December, but let’s be honest–Cowboys havent won a playoff game since Biggie was alive.

Who doesn’t love to see a reality show contestant naked? So I was just watching Around the Horn and learned a piece of sports trivia. Dolphins Hall of Famer Larry Csonka was on the cover of Sports Illustrated in August 1972, and apparently its one of the sneakiest middle finger flashings of all time. Judge for yourself:

So I went to this football game and a rugby match broke out….Trinity University (the one in Texas), was down 24-22 with one play to go against Millsaps College. They were 61 yards away from the end zone, so field goals are out of the question. 60 seconds and 15 laterals later they supplant Stanford-Cal as the most amazing college football ending ever:
And who doesn’t love a great lateral ending. This instantly has to make the short list of improbable football endings with The Play, and The Music City Miracle.

Thankfully this happened a good 10 years before The Play so we don’t have to hear the commentators say “The only thing missing is the band”. Because, that’s so original.
I remember the night they showed this clip on The Daily Show last year, because I damn near fell out of my chair laughing. I’ve been searching youtube ever since for a full clip of Joe Frazier trying to swim. In the early 70s he was on a show called The Superstars. Think of it as an early version of Pros vs. Joes. One of the events that the contestants had to do was a 50m freestyle, where Frazier nearly drowned and admitted afterwards that he’d never swam before in his life.
Now that The Daily Show has put all their clips online, I can at least show some of Frazier’s swim here. Incidentally this was also Larry Wilmore’s debut on The Daily Show, where he talked about how lame racism has become.
